The Salem city will get two new flyovers at an outlay of Rs. 138.17 crore. Both the flyovers will come on the Karuru – Salem – Bengaluru national highway.
Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Minister for PWD, State Highways and Minor Ports, laid the foundation for both the projects on Sunday morning.
The integrated flyover will come up at AVR roundabout – Koranguchavadi junction at an outlay of Rs. 111.40 crore. The proposed flyover will be to a length of 1,293 metres and width of 17.25 metres. The flyover will have 32 spans with a length of 25 metres each. The project is expected to be completed within two years.
The flyover at Tiruvakavundanur will be to a length of 601 m and a width of 17.25 m and will account for eight spans of 25 m each. The State Highways Department has planned to complete this project in 18 months time.
Traffic bottlenecks are a perennial menace on the Salem – Bengaluru national highway and Tiruvakavundanur roundabout to Koranguchavadi junction. The traffic congestion becomes severe during the peak hours every day and also during the weekends, when a large number of people from the neighbouring Karnataka state visit the hill stations of Yercaud and Kolli hills.
The construction of the two flyovers will bring much respite to both the local citizens and the visitors to a big extent. The work on the construction of a two-tier flyover at an outlay of Rs. 320 crore at the Five Roads Junction in the heart of the city is also in progress at present.
